WHAT IS COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY?
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy? These two practices that are closely related and both are considered ‘talk therapy’.
Counselling often refers to shorter term therapy, likely to last a number of weeks or months. It tends to focus on specific issues or life changes, providing immediate support and strategies. It is an exploration of the here and now and focuses on support for current emotional or psychological issues.
Psychotherapy is longer term, likely to be open ended and last a number of months or years. Delves deeper into underlying issues, deep-rooted difficulties that affect a person’s life, often linked to attachment and patterns of relating and behaviour. It focuses on psychological process – explores the content of what the person is bringing and what is happening between the client and therapist in the room. It is an exploration of the root and core issues and causes of emotional and psychological difficulties.
In my therapeutic practice, I work from one lens or both, depending on what the person needs, flexibly adapting the therapeutic work to each client.
To me...
…therapy is an opportunity for change, for a shift, to do something different. It is about a journey back to yourself, to be able to connect with yourself and others and the world. It’s a space for co-creation of new experiences and exploration of new perspectives. A space to be yourself. To bring forth and endeavour to accept every part of you, even the ones you don’t like, because each and every one of them is valuable and makes you unique.
The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy says...
"Therapy provides a safe and confidential space for you to talk to a trained professional about your issues and concerns. Your therapist will help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and of others.
A counsellor will not give you their opinions or advice or prescribe medication. They will help you find your own solutions – whether that’s making effective changes in your life or finding ways of coping with your problems."
